Leather vs. Kydex: Which Holster Material Is Right for You?

When it comes to choosing the right holster, material matters — a lot. Whether you're carrying every day, hitting the range, or just want a dependable way to keep your sidearm secured, the decision between leather and Kydex can make a big difference in comfort, performance, and reliability.

As someone who started in Kydex and transitioned to leather after repeated customer requests, I’ve worked extensively with both. Here’s a breakdown of each material’s strengths and drawbacks, and some guidance to help you choose what’s right for you.

Kydex Holsters: Pros & Cons

Kydex is a thermoplastic material that's been popular in the holster world for a couple of decades. It’s known for its precision fit and mechanical retention. I spent my early years in this business building Kydex rigs, so I’ve seen firsthand what they do well — and where they fall short.

Pros:

  • Excellent Retention: Kydex “clicks” into place, giving you a solid feel that your weapon is secure.

  • Durability: Tough, weather-resistant, and not prone to stretching or sagging.

  • Maintenance-Free: Doesn’t absorb sweat or moisture. Easy to clean.

  • Fast Draws & Reholsters: The rigid shell allows for quick, consistent access.

Cons:

  • Comfort: Rigid plastic can dig into your body, especially for IWB (inside waistband) carry.

  • No Give or Flex: Doesn’t conform to your body over time like leather can.

  • Can Be Loud: The draw and reholster can produce an audible “click” — not ideal for every situation.

  • Wear on Firearm Finish: The hardness of Kydex can wear down firearm finishes with long-term use.

Leather Holsters: Pros & Cons

Leather is the traditional choice — and for good reason. It’s been trusted for generations and brings a level of comfort and character that no synthetic can match. I began working with leather in 2016 after repeated customer requests, and it quickly became the backbone of my business.

Pros:

  • Comfort: Leather is flexible, softens over time, and molds to your body — perfect for all-day carry.

  • Quiet Draw: Ideal for situations where stealth matters.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Leather just looks and feels better to many people. It tells a story.

  • Natural Retention: When properly molded, leather offers secure carry without sacrificing draw speed.

Cons:

  • Maintenance Required: Leather should be conditioned and kept dry to avoid long-term wear.

  • Break-In Time: New leather holsters can be tight and need a bit of time to form to your firearm.

  • Not Ideal for All Climates: Extreme heat, sweat, and moisture can affect leather if it’s not properly cared for.

When to Choose Leather vs. Kydex

Choosing between leather and Kydex comes down to how and why you carry:

Use Case Recommended Material
EDC (Everyday Carry) Leather (for comfort and long wear)
Range Use / Training Kydex (for fast draws and easy reholstering)
Open Carry Depends on preference; both work well
Concealed Carry Leather (better concealment and comfort under clothing)
Tactical / Harsh Environments Kydex (rugged, weatherproof performance)

My Perspective: Why I Now Focus on Leather

When I first got started in 2015, I was building Kydex holsters in my spare time. It was a clean, efficient material and got the job done. But the more customers I spoke with — especially serious everyday carriers — the more I heard the same thing: “I want something more comfortable, something that lasts and looks better over time.”

In 2016, I picked up leatherworking. What started as a few custom jobs turned into a full-on shift in direction. By the time I lost my job as a machinist in 2020 due to the COVID slowdown, I was ready to go all-in. Leather gave me something no machine shop or mass-manufactured material could — the ability to create gear by hand that feels personal, durable, and built to serve.

Every piece I make is crafted in my Montpelier, Ohio shop, one at a time. No outsourcing. No shortcuts.

Still Not Sure? I’ve Got You Covered.
